Our journey

Our story began with fashion legend Henry Lehr, whose visionary approach to style set the foundation for timeless, effortless fashion.

Today, American Colors by Henry Lehr continues his legacy under the leadership of his son, Alex Lehr, staying true to the brand’s commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and American-made excellence.

From the early days of Henry Lehr’s influence to the evolution of American Colors, our journey has been shaped by key moments of creativity, innovation, and dedication—each step bringing us to where we are now.

1965

Henry Lehr built his business on quality, craftsmanship, and personal relationships, shaped by his early experiences in Austria, where his mother sewed the family’s clothing, and in Spain, where he worked with leather artisans. His innate ability to connect with people—manufacturers, wholesalers, or customers—set him apart. This spirit continued with his son Alex, beginning their collaboration on Elizabeth Street in Nolita, NY.

1980

Growing up in the family business, Alex Lehr spent countless hours in the shops, observing his father and the rhythm of retail. Henry believed in learning by doing, so by the time Alex joined full-time, he had already developed an instinct for great products and loyal customers.

1997

Alex began working at Henry Lehr full-time, managing production logistics and refining fit and fabric. He quickly learned that success wasn’t just about operations but about building strong partnerships. Trade shows taught him that buyers weren’t just purchasing products—they were investing in quality and authenticity.

1999

American Colors by Henry Lehr, launched in 1995, and quickly became known for its classic American sportswear and rich, garment-dyed palettes, balancing comfort, style.

2004

In 2004, Alex and his wife Shannon took over the brand, maintaining its integrity while updating it for a modern audience. In 2007, a partnership with a Japanese textile company elevated the collection with premium fabrics, expanding its reach both in the U.S. and internationally.

2025

After the Henry Lehr store in Westport closed in 2014, loyal customers eagerly awaited its return. In 2024, Alex and Shannon found the perfect location at 66 Post Road East, just around the corner from the original store. The new flagship American Colors store is more than a retail destination; it’s a celebration of decades of commitment to quality, strong customer relationships, and the tradition of American craftsmanship.
